COUNTRY ELITE JOIN LIONEL RICHIE FOR ACM SPECIAL

COUNTRY ELITE JOIN LIONEL RICHIE FOR ACM SPECIAL

You may know him from his time with the Commodores (“Brick House,” “Easy,” “Sail On”) or his legendary hits of the ‘80s (“Dancing on the Ceiling,” “Hello,” “All Night Long”), but legendary singer-songwriter Lionel Richie cut his teeth on a Southern mixture of country, R&B and Gospel music as a kid in Tuskegee, Alabama. After four decades in the music business, Richie is celebrating those roots with the Academy of Country Music through the primetime CBS special ACM Presents: Lionel Richie and Friends – A Lifetime of Hits.
Taping on Monday, April 2nd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, this country collaboration will feature duets from Richie’s upcoming album Tuskegee along with some of his greatest hits performed by country superstars Jason Aldean, The Band Perry, Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, Martina McBride, Rascal Flatts, Kenny Rogers and many more. Richie says the album was a “coming home” to the place his musical passion was first stoked.
“This place called Tuskegee is where it all began—the place where I felt that everything was available and possible. It's where I learned about life and love and the power of music, and the place I built a musical foundation that knows no genres or boundaries,” Richie said. “Tuskegee also proved the perfect melting pot for all of my influences as a writer, and as my songwriting progressed, I realized that my songs perfectly translated to country music.
Shortly after leaving the Commodores in 1980, Richie penned “Lady,” which became one of country legend Kenny Rogers’ biggest hits. Richie was also a co-writer on the iconic ‘80s tribute song “We Are the World,” which also featured country acts Rogers and Willie Nelson.
Tickets for ACM Presents: Lionel Richie and Friends – A Lifetime of Hits will go on sale to ACM A-List members on Jan. 17th and to the general public on Jan. 25th. Proceeds from the show will benefit ACM Lifting Lives, the Academy’s philanthropic arm which works to improve lives through music.  GET TICKETS

  1. Probably! I'm wondering the same thing. Although there's no mention of Shania, I bet she wants to keep it on the down low. If she is in fact taking part in this show maybe she will also attend the ACM Awards the night before.

Lionel Richie's 'Lifetime of Hits' Celebrated With TV Special

Country's biggest names had better not party too hard at this year's ACM Awards, which will broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 1. The next day, at the very same arena, many of those same superstars -- among them Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney and Rascal Flatts -- will tape 'Lionel Richie & Friends: A Lifetime of Hits,' a special slated to air later this year on CBS.

The show will feature songs from 'Tuskegee,' Lionel's forthcoming collection of duets with top country acts. Although he's best known for his funk, R&B and pop hits, the Alabama native grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry and the era's classic country hitmakers.

On his new album, he teams with such artists as Shania Twain, Blake Shelton and Darius Rucker to reinterpret some of his best-known songs.

"By growing up in Alabama, I had a melting pot of the whole pie: R&B, gospel, country," Lionel told The Boot earlier this year. "And not just outside of town, but right through the airwaves of my city. So when I started writing, songs like 'Stuck on You' and 'Easy [Like Sunday Morning]' were actually country, but I didn't even realize that was my influence. Now, years later making this album, I didn't realize that so many of my country artist friends use those songs as the template for their lives."

Also slated to appear on 'A Lifetime of Hits' are Lady Antebellum, the Band Perry, Martina McBride and Kenny Rogers, among others. Tickets range from $105 to $205, and proceeds will go to ACM Lifting Lives, a charity run by the Academy of Country Music.
